Keep in mind that there is no "magic formula" to get huge amounts of traffic, or get highly rated in search engines. There are many factors involved. This list includes basic information that most web site owners and bloggers can implement easily.

1) Page titles should contains keywords relevant to what the page is focused on. People will not search on the internet for "Bob's Blog" or "My Cool Website", they will search for the topic of the website or blog. A title that contains your keywords will make a big difference. For example "Bobs's Montana Politics Blog" would be suited for a blog about Montana politics. Use something that contains your keywords and is not too long. You also need a description in your meta tags so that, when you are found in search results, there is an appealing description of your blog to encourage people to visit it.

2) Back links are link for your site, placed on other web sites. The more you have, the more that search engines will take notice of you, and the more people will see that your site exists. This can be one of the the biggest factors in getting new visitors; make them aware of you in as many relevant places as you can. By relevant, I mean that you don't want to link with sites that have nothing in common with your site. You want to link to other sites that revolve around the same topic as your site, or are close/relevant to your site.

You can request reciprocal links to other related sites and blogs, leave comments on other blogs with the url of your blog, etc.

3) Indexed pages are pages of your blog or website stored in a search engines system. You should have some type of sitemap that you can submit/ping to the search engines so that they will crawl your blog more often, index your pages, and help your search rankings. Many blog programs have this option built into them. Google and Yahoo allow you to add XML sitemaps for websites so that they are aware of your site and know exactly where to go to crawl your pages.

4) Content is usually the biggest factor in getting search engines to visit you, once they are aware of you. You should add new posts as often as possible, and make them relevant to your sites topic. Users and search engines always want new content, and search engines will crawl your blog more often as you continue to add more content.

5) Keywords. If you write an article about the solar system, try to incorporate the terms "solar system" in the title of the post if possible, and frequently in the article itself. Not so much that it sounds/reads unnatural, but enough that search engines get the overall idea of the article, and recognize those terms as keywords within the article.

The idea is to maximize the use of keywords wherever you can without overdoing it.
* Page Title - Search engines weigh your page title heavily.
* Page Description - This is where you want to write phrases that catch attention, but rich with keywords too.
* File Names - Use keywords to name files, pictures, photos, graphs, videos, etc that you're using in your site.
* Internal Links - Use text links instead of images as text links carry more weight when getting ranked in search engines.
* Tags or Labels - Blog posts should be tagged or labeled with keywords to help strengthen SEO. Some prominent blog directories, like Technorati, uses these tags to identify your blog for others to search.
